DJ Derek

Two Bristol legends just a stones throw away came under my radar. One I was seeking out and one by pure chance. The mural above “One Love” is a tribute to a local man well-known in Bristol as DJ Derek. My pure chance discovery was painted by Serp, Deam2, Piro and Rpm on the side of a house along Richmond Avenue. I only discovered this artwork in my search for a very faded Banksy nearby under the St Andrews Street sign.  Another bonus to the left of “One Love” is a Stewy full size stencil tribute to DJ Derek. Sadly Derek went missing in 2015 and was found dead eight months later in March 2016 aged 78. The story of the ex accountant turned reggae DJ can be found on these two links. https://www.bristol247.com/news-and-features/news/dj-dereks-death-confirmed-at-cribbs-causeway-1457700279/   https://www.bristol247.com/news-and-features/people/obituary-dj-derek/

Banksy reaching new heights

DSCF9030eA one in a million chance that I stopped my car almost at the top of the Cheddar Gorge to get out and stretch my legs with a short scramble up the side of the rock face only to find the fading weathered words of a Banksy stencil “This is not a photo opportunity”. Also just below where I was standing, I saw two women climbing the rock face. I have blended a snap of one of the ladies with the Banksy snap to make this image…. Not tooooooo cheesy I hope…… And how did Banksy know I would one day bring my camera to this very spot?

Sadly the Grim Reaper by Banksy in the top left side of the collage having been removed from the hull of the Thekla, now hangs inside the Bristol Life Gallery in the M Shed Museum, Bristol. John D’oh adds much humour with fracking good artwork! Local Bristol artist Cheo adds a buzz with his trademark bee!

Another by chance discovery… I was on my way to visit Christie’s auction house to see the upcoming sale of artwork by Stik.  I noticed this unlikely mural painted in posh Kensington by Jony Midnight from June 2015.  Not untill I got home from a busy day traveling around London exploring art in Kensington, Croydon, Forest Hill and Homerton did I find out that Francis Bacon lived in this expensive mews. I also noticed that the orignal mural did not have the figure of Francis Bacon featured at all… So who added the monochrome Francis Bacon….. Has Banksy been up to his old tricks?

Saatchi to Missing Banksy

Below are snaps taken from a trip to the Saatchi Gallery on 15th February 2016. Such is the amazing amount of diverse talented female artists currently being featured under three banners in the gallery: Champagne Life ~ RevelationsXX: A Moment in Time.  I have also added a collage snap I made using the outside of the building opposite the French Embassy in knightsbridge.  Banksy recently used this building for his now missing artwork depicting his distaste for the treatment of tear gassing refugees camped around Calais. All traces of the Bansky artwork have now been removed and new hoardings plus a coat of cream paint has been added.  Rather than show you that, I have placed some of my own snaps taken during the London trip to include more artwork seen inside the Saatchi Gallery and one from Tooting.  http://www.saatchigallery.com/
